A Note from Web Master: Working Bouviers means Bouviers doing the jobs they were bred to do. In my opinion, the protection aspect of that heritage is too often misunderstood, overlooked or ignored. A dog that excels in one of the protection sports is a well balanced, structurally sound dog, with good drive, intelligence and an excellent temperament. They can excel in other more popular sports such as obedience, agility and herding. The Bouvier is not the dog for everyone - nor should they be. A Bouvier can be a handful. They require training. They need mental stimulation. They make wonderful companions, but if you don't give them something to do, they will find something - and you might not like what they find to do! They need regular grooming. They need interaction with their people. In short - they require time and attention, just like any pet. They may require more time than you are able to spend. But there is nothing quite like the bond you get with your dog when you work him or her! I would encourage all dog owners to find a sport they like - herding, agility, obedience, Schutzhund, Ring, tracking or what ever you enjoy - and start working with your dog. All dog sports should come with a warning label - so I'll warn you now - they are ADDICTIVE! And they are not cheap. Even if you find a wonderful trainer or club near by, sooner or later you will want to attend trials, enter trials or go to seminars. This will require more time and money. But it is FUN. It is a very rewarding hobby. |
